Subsurface settlement profiles above shallow and deep model tunnels at large ground loss

The construction of any tunnel will give rise to ground movements in the form shown in Figure 1. Geotechnical engineers are responsible for assessing these ground movements related to the tunnel design and an assessed construction quality, usually expressed as a volume loss (VL, %). They should demonstrate that neighbouring structures will not be subject to excessive differential settlements.
