ABSTRACT
Economic, political and societal changes in Japan have forced the construction industry to shift the focus from building new, to maintaining existing infrastructure. Good maintenance can extend the life of an engineering structure considerably. Overlooked defects can have devastating results. This is especially true for tunnels and other underground structures. However, to reach the goal of extending the life time of a tunnel while maintaining safety, a well carried out maintenance program needs to be implemented.
