ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the kind of fundamental change an empowered ethics Program Management Office and empowered chief ethics officer can effect. The molar or corporate entity serves as the touchpoint between the macro broad economy and the micro personal realm. If large corporate cultures become ethically self-policing in recognition of the benefits that accrue, essentially powered by informed self-inter- est, a much more positive cycle of macro and molar ethics becomes possible. The chapter also looks at what the industry, comprised of Information Technology (IT) professionals, would require for meaningful definition and self-policing of a robust ethical construct. In order toachieve a workable set of guidelines for IT workers, the following items at a minimum are required: Commitment to transparency of data sharing and information at an industry level; and global review board for enforcement, including reporting of violations, at an industry level.
