ABSTRACT: Road tunnel lighting system requires brightness for safe recognition visually, in order to avoid other vehicles and passengers, and as a result, standard values to be maintained level are determined. In general, road tunnels in JAPAN, brightness is adjusted from time to time depending on the brightness outdoors and by employing peak and off-peak periods in compliance with standard values. However, lighting is continuously kept on regardless of the existence of users during a 24-hour period. The ESTL (Energy-Saving Tunnel Lighting) system the authors proposed in this paper is a system targeting mountain tunnels for which traffic volume is remarkably low, and contributes to the prevention of the greenhouse effect through a drastic reduction in CO2 levels. At the same time, ESTL reduces energy waste, secures safety and provides a comfortable visual environment. In this paper, authors introduce the ESTL system, and discuss economical effects of this system. And numerical simulation will be done to estimate actual traffic conditions and electric power consumption amounts.
