ABSTRACT
In 2004, officials in Maryland began looking into the use of nonnative oysters, such as the Asian Suminoe oyster, as the target of oyster restoration, after efforts with native oysters proved ineffectual; however, the danger that the triploid nonnative would escape and breed proved fatal for the measure (Maryland Department of Natural Resources 2009b). Millions of dollars and years of effort went into the research of alternative measures for oyster restoration. The use of multi-criteria decision analysis to elucidate decision makers’ preferences and thought processes was deemed useful in this analysis. This chapter is unique in that some of the errors used in the assessment are discussed and provide the starting point for discussion on improvements.
