ABSTRACT
The discrete element modeling of most engineering problems usually begins with the preparation of a dense initial arrangement of touching discrete elements. Regular arrangements cannot reliably reflect the behavior of a material with an irregular microstructure, but to produce a random arrangement of thousands (perhaps millions) of densely packed particles can be a rather challenging task.
