ABSTRACT

In this paper, a variant of the Granular Medium Lattice Gas (GMLG) model (Károlyi & Kertész, 1999) known as the Sheared Granular Lattice Gas (hereafter SGLG) model is presented.

2 SHEARED GRANULAR LATTICE GAS (SGLG) MODEL

The granular medium is confined between two horizontal boundaries – the bottom boundary, which is fixed and the top plate, which is free to horizontally translate towards the right. Shear force is exerted by the top plate on the granular bed via a layer of granular material attached to the plate. This technique has previously been employed in experimental approaches (Dalton & Corcoran, 2001; Nasuno et al. 1997) and DEM models (Aharonov & Sparks, 1999). The distance between the boundaries, D, is a constant. With the inclusion of periodic boundary conditions, the SGLG model approximates Couette style geometry. An illustration of the system is shown in Figure 1.
