ABSTRACT

Mechanoluminescence (ML) is a type of luminescence induced during any mechanical stressing of solids. For example, grinding, crushing, compressing, and rubbing of solids can excite ML. Nearly one-half of all inorganic solids of both crystalline and noncrystalline structures exhibit the phenomenon of ML, Chandra (1999). ML is often used to measure the velocity of crack propagation in solids or to image crack structure, Matsui (2001), Xu (1999).
