ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, we considered the effects of elevated CO2 in the soil on three of the four soil physical factors that affect root growth: soil water, soil compaction, and soil temperature. The fourth factor is soil aeration, which includes the effects of both oxygen and CO2, and we saw that lack of oxygen in the soil limits root growth more than elevated levels of CO2. We now turn to the same three soil physical factors as they are affected by elevated CO2 in the air above the soil.
