ABSTRACT
Ecosystems are organized hierarchically, which gives ecosystems several advantages: e variations (disturbances) are reduced on the higher and more important levels, repairs or adjustments of malfunctions are facilitated, the higher levels are less a¢ected by environmental disturbances, and the ontic openness can be utilized. e openness determines the space and timescale for the hierarchical levels.
