ABSTRACT
Two German physicists, J.R. Mayer and H.L.F. Helmholtz, working separately, showed that when a gas expands the internal energy of the gas decreases in proportion to the amount of work performed. ese observations led to the ‰rst law of thermodynamics: energy can be neither created nor destroyed.
