ABSTRACT

Two fundamentally distinct types of image enhancement techniques exist: those that operate within the spatial domain and those that operate in the frequency domain. While these terms are more clearly delineated in Chapter 9 we informally define the spatial domain as a way of representing an image by spatially arranging pixels (colors) to form a complete whole. The frequency domain is an alternate way of representing visual information by describing patterns of global fluctuation in images. This chapter focuses exclusively on spatial domain techniques, leaving the more difficult frequency domain issues for Chapter 9.
