ABSTRACT
In a laboratory, chemicals behave in predictable ways due to the controlled nature of a laboratory. Although the basic principles still apply, in the uncontrolled environment, chemical behavior is far more complicated. Physical, chemical, and biological forces inªuence the occurrence and movement of a chemical in the environment. This chapter describes the role of the physical framework of the environment-its geology-in determining the fate and transport of chemicals.
