ABSTRACT

For a complete understanding of a biological system, it is advisable to integrate structure and function, as the two are inextricably linked. In studies of roots, however, these are oen separated. Notable exceptions are the wide-ranging studies of McCully and Canny (see McCully 1995) and the numerous investigations of Clarkson, Sanderson, and Robards who considered the structure and function of roots with respect to ion and water uptake (see Clarkson 1996).
