ABSTRACT

The question of sunburn is both a clear-cut relationship between the sunburns suffered by plants and those suffered by humanity and the relationship between solar radiation and radiation developed by humans. As such, Capparis compounds possess great potential for use in skin salves, creams, milks, and ointments for mollifying, treating, and possibly preventing skin problems devolving from exposure to sunlight, most notably to its ultraviolet components. They also, though, may benefit radiation burns related to medical radiotherapy treatments and from industrial, military or, occupational exposure. The short Table 18.1 highlights three studies in C. spinosa, but the principles may be relevant for other species as well. Due to the excellent possibilities for advancing Capparis production to meet demand, with the aid of micropropagation and other evolving agronomical technology, safe Capparis agents for preventing and treating solar-acquired pathology and pathology from ionizing radiation may be practical.
