ABSTRACT
In this chapter we focus our attention upon two key areas associated with the expense of operating a data center that are often overlooked. ose areas are the heating and cooling systems within a building. Concerning heating systems, in addition to reviewing the operation and cost of different types of heating systems we also discuss the too often taken for granted hot water heater. When you think about the hot water heater, most of these devices are on 24/7 but the hot water they make is used infrequently. However, the cost of producing and keeping the water either warm or hot can be considerable. In some cases, hot water heaters may have been installed 20 or more years ago and are inefficient by today’s standards. us, we include a checklist of items to consider at the end of this chapter which, when performed, may acquaint you with one or more items to place on your action list of things to do.
