ABSTRACT

Satellite imagery systems often encounter problems with analysis and clarity of original images due to atmospheric conditions. Visual spectrum, photometric images are very susceptible to atmospheric effects. The vehicle detection algorithm is applied potentially multiple times in the iteration loop of restoration, detection and repeat. The system is interesting in that it has an iterative correction algorithm that includes an object detection subsystem that looks to find regions containing cars. Heuristic and non-physics-based approaches represent the other paradigm of atmospheric detection and correction algorithms. The algorithm accounts for horizontally varying atmospheric conditions and also includes the height dependence of the atmospheric radiance and transmittance functions to simulate the simplified properties of a three-dimensional atmosphere. Infrared (IR) light can be absorbed by water-based molecules in the atmosphere but imaging using IR sensors yields better results than visible spectrum cameras.
