ABSTRACT

Image subtraction is the pixel-by-pixel subtraction of one image from another. One use of image subtraction is the removal of the background. Images whether from visible spectrum, photometric cameras, or other sensors are often a key and primary source of data in distributed sensor networks. Effective use of images in a sensor network requires understanding of how images are created. Domains are alternative spaces in which to express the information contained in an image. Contrast stretching and histogram equalization are examples of image enhancement algorithms that attempt to increase the contrast or range of pixel values present in the image. Histogram equalization is a common technique for enhancing the appearance of images. Low-pass filtering performs smoothing on the image and removes high-frequency details from the image. Morphological operators get their name from the fact that they alter the form of the image.
