ABSTRACT

The advent of molecular biology helped us to understand the role of gene(s) in any cell or in any organism. This was the start of the one-gene-at-a-time approach to understand the signišcance of specišc gene(s) in biological response. With time, biological sciences have seen unprecedented development. In the past 20 years, high-throughput technologies have gained enormous importance, producing enormous amounts of data in minimal time with a minimal quantity of biological material. The data generated through high-throughput technology is suggestive of a holistic approach, where one can monitor alterations or effects of one indicator on various gene(s) and its product(s) simultaneously. In simple terms, omics is an approach that has reversed the way we study any biological system. Omics is a way to study the multifaceted aspects of a biological system, which is contrary to the established one-gene-at-a-time approach.
