- Metrics and Performance Measurement for Carbon Footprint Analyses

Accurately measuring carbon emissions, energy usage, and tracking trends are critical steps for a successful minimization program. Measurement is needed before a company can begin to manage and reduce carbon footprints or energy consumption. Without establishing a starting point, or baseline measurement, it is very dif’cult to develop strategies to meet organizational carbon and energy reduction goals. This chapter addresses this issue and discusses the various metrics to evaluate carbon and energy and minimization performance. The metrics can be separated into three categories:

• Environmental impact in terms of mission rates and energy consumption

• Business and ’nancial performance • Voice of the customers and stakeholders

The remainder of this chapter will address these three categories and discuss their role in developing a strong GHG minimization program.
