Model Construction

This chapter investigates how to solve practical problems by SVMs. Only the classification problems are considered here since the regression problems can be dealt with in a similar way.

Roughly speaking, a practical classification problem can be described as follows: Suppose that there is a kind of object that is divided into two classes, positive class and negative class, and we know some of them belong to the former and some to the latter. Our task is to establish a criterion and deduce whether a new object belongs to the positive or negative class.
