ABSTRACT

The term evidence-based toxicology (EBT) was fi rst introduced in 2005. Guzelian et al. (1) used the term in the context of causation and risk assessment in toxicology, whereas Hoffmann and Hartung (2,3) identifi ed commonalities of toxicologic tests assessment and evidence-based evaluation of diagnostic measures in medicine. The link to evidence-based medicine (EBM) was further explored emphasizing the need for more transparent, objective, and consistent approaches in toxicology (4). Especially EBM methodologies, such as systematic reviews, and practices, for example, as established by the Cochrane Collaboration, have been proposed (5,6). However, attempts adopting these approaches to toxicology, for example, as the development of a scoring tool for the inherent quality of toxicologic studies by Schneider et al. (7), remain scarce.
