ABSTRACT

Complete visualization with a good source of light is essential for examination of the oral mucosa, which is most readily inspected if the mouth is held half-open. All mucosal surfaces should be examined, starting away from the location of any known lesions. If the patient wears any removable prostheses these must be removed in the first instance, although it may be necessary later to replace the prostheses to assess fit, function and relationship to any lesion. The labial mucosa, buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and ventrum of tongue, dorsal surface of the tongue, hard and soft palates, gingivae and teeth should be examined in sequence ( Figs 2.2.1-2.2.4 ).
