ABSTRACT

The gingivae in health are firm, pale pink, with a stippled surface, and have sharp gingival papillae reaching up between adjacent teeth to the tooth contact point. The gingivae consist of a free gingival margin overlapping the amelo-dentinal junction of the tooth and a strip of attached ‘keratinized’ gingiva bound down to the alveolar bone that supports the teeth. The attached gingiva (pale pink) is clearly demarcated from the non-keratinized vascular alveolar mucosa.
