ABSTRACT

PRODUCT SELECTION There are several Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved fillers available for injection. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most popular. This is likely because of the documented safety of this filler, as well as the fact that it is reversible with hyaluronidase. In my practice, however, it is not the reason that it is my workhorse dermal filler. I have found great safety and effectiveness in all currently available fillers. The major advantage of HA is that it can go into the lips and others cannot. When I have a younger patient in need of a little softening of the nasolabial fold, they inevitably want “just a little in the lips” (Figs. 16.5 and 16.6). This means I cannot safely inject calcium hydroxy apatite, poly-L-lactic acid, or the current formulation of porcine collagen. These products have well-known problems with nodules when injected into the lips. For this reason, the fourth rule of one syringe wonder is “Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most versatile and can be stretched the easiest.”
