ABSTRACT

Airway segmentation from computed tomography (CT) is a useful tool for the detection and visualization of pathology in the chest region. Airway segmentation is generally the Žrst step in the development of a computer-aided detection algorithm for the airways, and can be used to extract features that indicate pathology, such as airway deformation, stenosis, and abnormal wall thickness. Segmentation separates the region belonging to the airways from the surrounding tissue and therefore can also be used to improve visualization, for example, using virtual bronchoscopy, or it can be used to identify related structures, such as the lung lobes, using the position of the airways [1].
