ABSTRACT

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of mortality cancer. In 1999, there were approximately 170,000 new cases of lung cancer [1,2], one in every 18 women and one in every 12 men develop lung cancer. Early detection of lung tumors (visible on chest Žlm as nodules) may increase the patient’s chance of survival [3,4], but detecting nodules is a complicated task (see, e.g., refs. [5,6]). Nodules show up as relatively low-contrast white circular objects within the lung Želds. The difŽculty for computer-aided detection (CAD) schemes is distinguishing true nodules from (overlapping) shadows, vessels, and ribs.
