ABSTRACT
The benefits of traditional gear design are well known: It is comprehensively standardized and has great availability of design software, tooling, and a massive volume of experimental data. It provides acceptable solutions for practically all types of gear drive applications. A goal of this chapter is not to undermine or criticize the traditional gear design approach, but to compare it with Direct Gear Design® to help a gear engineer choose the most suitable design method for a particular gear application.
