ABSTRACT

The rationale for the use of laparoscopy for the evaluation of the peritoneal cavity in patients presenting with suspicious or malignant adnexal masses is based on a conjunction of several points. Laparoscopy is an invaluable tool to explore the entire peritoneal cavity while avoiding a midline laparotomy. A number of peritoneal growths related to adnexal malignancies are too small to be identified by modern imaging techniques including computerized tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography. In addition, adnexal malignancies may metastasize to any point of the peritoneal cavity.
