UKELD score of > 49 needs to be achieved which predicts a 1-year mortality risk of greater than 9% ( 7 ). Exceptions to this rule are patients with HCC (discussed in Chapters 20 and 21), and variant syndromes consisting of diuretic-resistant ascites, intractable pruritus, hepatopulmonary syndrome, chronic hepatic encephalopathy, familial amyloidosis, primary hyperlipidemias, and polycystic liver disease ( 7 ).
