ABSTRACT

What is diagnostically problematic is the fact that a signifi cant number of NMs are hypomelanotic or amelanotic. In these cases, atypical vascular patterns may be the only clues for the diagnosis of such lesions (see chap. 8e, “Amelanotic melanoma”). While there is yet to be a study which has examined the vascular patterns exclusively of nodular amelanotic/ hypomelanotic melanoma, the vascular features more commonly seen in thick light-colored melanoma versus thin melanoma include hairpin vessels, large diameter vessels, and ulceration (Figs. 8c.1-8c.7) (Menzies et al., 2008).
