ABSTRACT

The National Highway Trafœc Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics for 2006 show that 106,000 people were injured in crashes with large trucks (10,001 pounds or greater). This was based on drivers who traveled 2.996 billion miles. However, in 2006 the overall fatality rate was down to a historic low of 1.45 per 100 million miles traveled, with 42,462 people killed and 2,575,000 people injured in motor vehicle accidents.16 Vehicle accidents involving large trucks are of serious concern for motor ¢eet safety managers, with the data showing that more than 40 percent of all occupational fatalities are related to transportation. Moreover, accidents involving large trucks accounted for 11 percent of all trafœc fatalities, or 4,995 deaths. Highway crashes were the leading cause of occupational fatalities in the United States (average of 1,300 civilian deaths each year, or 22 percent of all worker deaths).
