ABSTRACT

Membrane processes (MP) nd increased applications in the food, beverage, and nutraceutical industries (Daun et al. 2001; Drioli and Giorno 2009, 2010; Pabby et al. 2009; Echavarria et al. 2011; Mohammad et al. 2012; Akin et al. 2012; Lin et al. 2012; Carstensen et  al. 2012a). This chapter aims at membrane ltration applications, covering lower-pressure MP, microltration (MF, 20-400 kPa), ultraltration (UF, 200-1400 kPa), and nanoltration (NF, 1-4 MPa). Reverse osmosis (RO) as a high-pressure-driven MP (2-10 MPa) with different transport mechanisms will be discussed later as well because it is nding application in the food industry and in biotechnology.
