ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss the fundamentals of sample handling: how to select the correct sample or subsample, what material (if any) to use for mounting, and how to measure sample components such as fibers or particles. We will focus on basics and general principles; the procedures selected for any task will be application-specific. What is always true is that the appropriateness of the sample-how you select and prepare it-dictates the quality and reliability of the results.
