ABSTRACT

Margin Width and LR It is intuitive that LR could be decreased by excising a wider tissue margin around an invasive tumor; however, close margins (as defi ned by independent studies ranging from 1 to 3 mm) do not show consistent evidence to suggest improved local control. Table 36.1 shows no clear difference in LR rates in cases with negative surgical margins based on margin widths of 1 mm (0-7%), 2 mm (3-10%), and microscopically negative margins (2-4%) (11,18,19,32-51).
