ABSTRACT

Injury remains one of the largest public health problems worldwide. In 2014 in the United States, approximately 29 million people were treated in an emergency room for injuries. More than 2.8 million people were admitted to the hospital with an estimated 180,000 dying from their injuries. More than 2.8 million people will be admitted to the hospital, and nearly 180,000 will die from their injuries. The monetary cost in medical care and lost productivity exceeds $400 billion. Injury, whether intentional or unintentional, continues to be among the leading causes of death in all age groups. Table 23.1 outlines the leading causes of death in the United States [1].
