ABSTRACT

Case study The Bhopal plant opened in 1969 and produced the pesticide carbaryl. Ten years later, the plant began manufacturing methyl isocyanate (MIC). This was a cheaper, but more toxic, substance used in the manufacture of pesticides. Union Carbide chose Bhopal, a city of 900,000 people in India, because of its central location and its proximity to a lake and a good transportation system.
