ABSTRACT

One of the most common activities in electronics thermal analysis is that of designing heat sinks. Heat sinks occur in so many different geometries that it is possible to cover only the most common. In those situations where the geometry of a heat sink does not resemble something described in this chapter, you have other options: (1) perform a literature search for a study of your particular problem, (2) contact heat sink vendors as a source of test data, (3) analyze your problem using computational fluid dynamics software, or (4) perform a test of a prototype of your design. No matter what choice you make, there is an excellent chance that you can at least make an estimate of the flow characteristics of your design using data in this chapter.
