ABSTRACT
The kanban card is a critical component of famous approach that uses physical cards to signal when to move materials within a manufacturing or production facility or to move materials from a supplier to the plant. Lean production scheduling is generally a by-product of lead time reduction on machine setups. Lead time reduction refers to the steps we need to take to reduce machine setup times, a common issue in manufacturing. We can also apply failure mode and effects analysis to processes, usually to the manufacturing process although the methodology is not limited to manufacturing. With value stream mapping, we show the timing, the quantities, and the amount of money involved in the process; in effect, we have taken process mapping and expanded on the concept. Often, when we are looking at a process, we measure cycle time with the primary interest being cycle time reduction.
