ABSTRACT

In sh there are two major muscle ber types, which are normally classied by their color: (1) white muscle bers and (2) red muscle bers. Unlike other vertebrates, the ber types in sh are present in different positions within the myotome and are easy to distinguish. The white bers are employed for high-speed, short-time swimming using anaerobic metabolic pathways to provide energy; while the red muscle bers are employed for routine activity such as migration using aerobic metabolic pathways to provide sustained energy (Johnson 1999).
