ABSTRACT
Genes encode multiple, possibly hundreds of thousands, of proteins and peptides. It has been suggested that tens of thousands of protein families exist, although it is difcult to exactly dene a protein family. It seems that most of endogenous peptides and proteins carry biological functions, making the peptide/protein eld extremely important for understanding the functioning of organisms, as well as for development of therapeutic strategies.
