ABSTRACT

Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, which originated in ancient India. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word “yug,” which means union. In the spiritual sense, yoga means union of the mind, body, and spirit. Yoga is depicted as a tree and comprises eight aspects or “limbs”: “yama” (universal ethics), “niyama” (individual ethics), “asana” (physical postures), “pranayama” (breath control), “pratyahara” (control of the senses), “dharana” (concentration), “dhyana” (meditation), and “Samadhi” (bliss) (Iyengar 1976; Figure 30.1).
