ABSTRACT

Thermodynamics describes the equilibrium behavior of chemical species in a mixture, but does not give the rate at which a new equilibrium is achieved when the temperature or pressure is changed. Chemical kinetics along with thermodynamics are needed to predict the reaction rates of well-mixed systems. In addition, if the system is not well mixed, mass transfer effects also come into play, as for example in non-premixed ¢ames and solid fuel combustion.
