ABSTRACT

The diesel engine is the dominant type of engine for heavy-duty on-road and off-road vehicles, marine transportation, and industrial power sources. While some light-duty vehicles (less than 2700 kg) use diesel engines, issues of weight, noise, odor, and emissions have limited the use of diesel engines for light-duty vehicles, especially in the United States. If light-duty diesel vehicles can be made to meet emissions standards, they offer a means of improving vehicle fuel economy.
