ABSTRACT

In contrast to gaseous detonation waves, which were discovered over 100 years ago, it was not recognized until the 1960s that a detonation wave can propagate through a two-phase mixture of liquid fuel and gaseous oxidizer. The fuel can be in the form of liquid droplets or a liquid –lm on the walls of a tube. This chapter will –rst consider spray detonations and then will discuss liquid layer detonations. Two-phase detonations can occur with nonvolatile fuels as well as with more volatile fuels where the detonation velocity is higher. While these types of detonations are generally to be avoided because of the high transient pressures involved, which can be very destructive, there may yet be some practical applications of two-phase detonations developed.
