ABSTRACT
In this chapter we develop the essential concepts from differential and integral calculus and discuss the role they play in this text in the context of geophysical fluid dynamics. We will also use this opportunity to hint at the issues we will face when we need to approximate the typical rates of change that appear in the governing equations of motion.
