ABSTRACT

Figure 12.2 shows how the American Society of Safety Engineers defined the "Scope and Functions" of the safety and health professional in 1966 and later in 1994 (Cacha, 1997). Figure 12.2 is as appropriate now as it was in 1966. Stated in simpler terms, the functions of a safety and health professional are to (1) discover and define safety and health problem(s) within the organization, (2) devise solutions to the problem(s), (3) communicate and implement the solution(s) within the organization, and (4) monitor the effectiveness of the solutions. Since "standing still is really nothing more than moving backwards," we can see how important it is for the safety and health professional to continuously seek beneficial changes in the organization by using the four steps in Figure 12.2.
