ABSTRACT
The pelagic division of the marine environment includes the neritic province (all of the water over the continental shelves), and the oceanic province that includes all of the waters that are contained in the open, or deep seas, which lies offshore of the continental shelf break (Figure 16.3). This immense province is further divided into several zones on the basis of depth and other criteria.
