ABSTRACT

This book is targeted toward readers with educational backgrounds in biomedical engineering, physiology, biophysics, molecular biology, and other life sciences who wish to learn how to better understand, describe, model, and manipulate complex systems. In this book Ihave stressed the complexity associated with biochemical, genomic, physiological, medical, ecological, and other living systems, and I also have introduced the reader to the complexity inherent in economic systems. This focus re¦ects the education, experience, interests, and bias of the author. Also, we should all recognize the complexity inherent in energy, weather, political, and sociological systems, to mention afew of many other complex systemswe deal with on anear-daily basis. Hopefully, the material presented in this book will introduce those with interests in these systems to the tools and mind-set they need to effectively tackle complex systems.
