ABSTRACT

Chrome dyes are not as bright as acid dyes and the shades are similar to 1:2 metal complex dyes. The latter dyes are suitable for light to medium shades, while chrome dyes are best for heavy dark shades. The light fastness of some chrome dyes is not good in light shades. The dyes of both dye-classes are often brightened by adding to the recipe a small amount of milling acid dyes. More dyes and labor are required in dyeing with mordant dyes. On the other hand, mordant dyes seldom give such bright shades, as do the acid dyes.

Despite numerous predictions of the demise of chrome mordant dyes over the last few years, it is clear that they are still important in the market place due to their extraordinary fastness properties and economy, especially on heavy dark shades like navy and black.
